UK registration scheme for holiday lets to launch soon

registration scheme

Sir Chris Bryant, the UK’s Minister of State for Media, Tourism, and Creative Industries, has announced that a registration scheme for short-term rentals in England will be up and running ‘very soon’.

Sir Chris said initial set-up work had been completed and that only ‘technical matters’ on how the scheme will run need to be sorted out before the launch.

Hosts and property managers will be required to register any property which is operated as a short-term let, with the scheme designed to help local authorities identify ‘under the radar’ holiday lets and understand home many homes are being used in this way. It will also be used to stop owners from exceeding short-term rental limits in specific locations like London, where hosts are prohibited from renting out properties for more than 90 days without planning permission.

The register also hopes to create a ‘level playing field’ by forcing holiday let owners to bring each property up to the same safety and quality standards as other accommodation providers, like hotels and B&Bs.

The UK government has also published updated fire safety guidelines. Click here to download a copy of ‘Making your small paying guest accommodation safe from fire’.
