The Trump effect: Canadians ditch US for new destinations

Donald Trump. Canada. Tariffs. Travel.

The numbers don’t lie – Canadian travellers are snubbing American destinations in significant numbers. According to Key Data, vacation rental reservations from Canada to the US are down 21% in 2025 – a striking shift that many attribute to the lingering impact of President Donald Trump’s tariff war and shifting political climate.

Instead of heading south of the border, Canadians are opting for alternative destinations, with the UK, Barbados, France, Ireland, and Mexico seeing a surge in bookings. The reason behind the trend appears clear. Since Trump announced sweeping tariffs shortly after taking office, Canadians have rallied to the cause – including campaigns to buy local produce, high-profile jeering of the American national anthem during sporting events, and now, shunning US vacation hotspots.

Key Data shared the following facts with Holiday Cottage Handbook:

  • Canadian ‘staycations’ remain stable in 2025, with just a +1% change from last year.

  • Canadians booking reservations to the US have decreased by 21% compared to the same period in 2024. This amounts to:

    • 1,296 fewer reservations

    • About $4.6 million less in revenue for US hosts and property managers

  • The top five US states impacted by the Canadian travel boycott are: Florida, Hawaii, California, South Carolina, and Colorado.

  • Meanwhile, here are the five locations benefitting most from Canadians travelling elsewhere: England, Barbados, France, Ireland, and Mexico.

Are you a host or property manager affected by the drop in bookings from Canada?

Or perhaps you’re a host in England or France buoyed by the sudden influx of Canadian travellers?
